Fifty babies are born every week in Melbourne’s City of Casey, and that number is only going up.Casey Hospital in Berwick currently oversee almost 2500 births annually, quadruple the amount back when they opened in 2004. By the time these babies are planning their 21st parties, Melbourne is likely to be the largest city in the country – and thanks to a near $135 million boost, the hospital can keep up with the rapid growth in Melbourne’s outer southeast.Casey Hospital’s head obstetrician, Dr Mark Tarrant, told 9NEWS the upgrade will enable many new mothers with complex pregnancies to stay closer to home.“Currently women who might need high-dependency or intensive care services will need to birth at places like Dandenong or Monash Medical Centre,” Dr Tarrant said.The hospital is expected to support an additional 1300 births every year by the end of 2019.“With all the new housing and the population growth we anticipate in the next few years we’ll be bring it up close to 4000 births a year,” Dr Tarrant said.Pakenham mother of five, Shingay, an ED nurse at Casey Hospital, is celebrating the birth of her daughter, Chrisette, at Casey Hospital.She said she couldn’t be happier to be part of Melbourne’s baby boom.“It feels fantastic, more kids to hang around in the streets to play with the other kids. We’re just enjoying the beautiful lifestyle here…”.Casey Hospital is currently undergoing a $134.9 million upgrade, funded by the state government, and is expected to treat an additional 25,000 patients. They’ll gain four new operating theatres, new intensive care and day surgery units, an upgraded emergency department and a carpark that will fit an extra 333 cars.The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
